I am proud to announce that tomorrow, February 18, 2010 at 2PM (PST), the release of Pinnacle Cart version 3.7.0 will be launched. As we have previously addressed, this release brings a number of new and important features.

It is our company s vision to provide software that generates more traffic to your website, increases your visitor-to-purchase ratio and your average order. This release accomplishes all three! It has been a long time coming and we have a lot blood, sweat and tears into making this release a solution with features that will make you more money.

Most importantly, the PCI Security Council is certifying that you will now be using one of the most secure applications in the industry. Only a small handful of shopping carts have reached this level of accreditation.

Additionally, we want to thank all of our customers for the feedback on the beta release and the hundreds of hours our organization has spent testing the application. This level of involvement from everyone provides comfort that we have a very solid release. However, we recognize there will be bugs. Rest assured, our team is dedicated to working through any issues you may have. Even as we finalize the new packages for release tomorrow, our quality assurance team continues to test the software and we have already scheduled a tentative date for a bug release, if the situation warrants.

Hosted Customers

Licensed Customers
The new release will be available in your account area. If the download does not appear, you will need to purchase a support and upgrade package starting at $169.00.

Resellers
Go to your account to purchase the new release of Pinnacle Cart. If you purchased your first license within the last 30 days, the new release is included at no charge. Private Label resellers will need to request a new labeled package from the account area after the new release has been purchased.

Design/Development Changes
Any major release includes additions and changes to every PHP and database file. If you have custom changes to the PHP files, upgrading to the new release will overwrite the customizations. The design changes in this release are a significant move forward - we ve transitioned from a tabled structure to a CSS structure without tables. This most likely will create design challenges moving from version 3.6.4 to 3.7.0. As always, be sure to upgrade in a test environment and not on a live website.

SolidPHP (SPBAS) - VS - PHPLicengine

There are a few contenders for licensing/distribution software available online. The top two are SPBAS (also known as SolidPHP and PHPAudit) and PHPLicengine.

SolidPHP (SPBAS) PHPLicengine
SPBAS by SolidPHP - they have discontinued PHPAudit and Iono. After reviewing both products we ended up choosing SPBAS. It seemed to offer more features and have a larger support and community behind it. PHPLicengine - I’m not familiar with this one, but we downloaded the demo and tried it out. Great for those we cannot afford SPBAS and are looking for someone simple.

These licensing/distribution systems usually use a couple of methods:

1.) A local key - Your clients are given a key file which they have to upload to their server. The key expires after a set time and they then have to upload another key. You can automate this and have your script fetch the key automatically and store it in the db. Clients will quickly get fed up with having to upload a license key file every month etc.

2.) A remote “call home” every so often. You’ll need to code it so that if your site is off line then your script still works, and also if you move servers or change domains etc you don’t want you clients’ sites to stop working.

I have been using 2Checkout.com for over three years now on a small website that sells car alarms. This was one of my first online business I started up years ago. After awhile I wanted to offer my visitors something else besides Paypal. After hours of research I decided to go with 2Checkout because it was the only company that didn’t have monthly fees and only charged a one time setup fee of $50. Even though the transaction price of 5.5% + $.25 was higher than other companies, I didn’t have to pay a high monthly fee of $20 or so. This was perfect for me because I didn’t have a high sales volume and was beginning to move away from the company and branch on to advertising.

There are a lot of great things about 2Checkout.com. It is very easy to use and setup and doesn’t require a lot of knowledge of web programming. It has a lot of built in features that will help you make your checkout process easier. One of my favorite things about 2Checkout is that almost all ecommerce software supports 2Checkout.com.

If you are new to selling websites online, I recommend a third party service such as Escrow.com to handle payment. Escrow.com and its operating subsidiaries provide online escrow services that facilitate and accelerate e-commerce by assuring secure settlement.

They have a service for buying and selling domains online. Domain Name Escrow Service protects your money and your domain.

Since the Buyer pays Escrow.com and not the Seller, Escrow.com can withhold payment until it’s satisfied the domain name has been transferred by the Seller. One of the ways Escrow.com does this is by checking the WHOIS database of the appropriate Registrar* to make certain it properly reflects the new Buyer’s name as the domain name Registrant. Once this has been verified, Escrow.com releases payment to the Seller.

You however have to be careful. There is always risk in selling your website online and getting paid for it. You can always opt for Paypal. This is a great alternative but just watch the fees. If you sell your site for a lot of money, the Paypal fees will really eat up your profit.
